Sur is considered one of the oldest seaports and maritime cities in the world. It is situated on the east coast 310 km away from the capital city of Muscat, thus forming the largest city in the South Sharqiyah Governorate. The Portuguese occupied Sur in the 16th century until it was restored during the War of Arabia by Nasser bin Morshed in the 7th century. Sur City has played a vital role in trade amonge Oman and East Africa and India through its port, which was an import and export terminal for various goods and was an important center for the manufacture of boats and vessels transiting the oceans such as Baghla and Ghnja.

Fortress Sinisla

The fort was probably built during the reign of Imam Nasir bin Murshid Al-Yarabi. The fortress had a large role in repelling the Portuguese attacks on the eastern Omani coasts. The fort is located on a high hill overlooking the village of Senisla. It has three round towers and a square square. The fortress was used as a defensive center by virtue of its strategic location overlooking the coast of the Sea of Oman. The Sanisla fort was rebuilt during the period (1988-1989).
